The President of Universitat Oberta de Catalunya

Josep A. Planell Estany (Barcelona, 1951) took office as President of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya on April 2013. He graduated in Physics from the University of Barcelona and he is Doctor in Material Sciences from London University. Since 1992 he has been Professor in the Department of Material Sciences and Metallurgical Industry at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB, UPC). Before being named President of the UOC he hold the position of Director of the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia.

In 2013 he was awarded the European Society of Biomaterials’ George Winter Award. Previously, he had received the Distinction for University Research Dissemination from the Generalitat de Catalunya (2001), as well as the Barcelona City Award in the area of Research and Technology (2006).

He has been member of several institutions such as the Royal Academy of Doctors and the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (still in charge).
