Israel Rodríguez-Giralt

Israel Rodríguez-Giralt is Lecturer of Social Psychology in the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). His research aims at connecting the Study of Social Movements and Science and Technology Studies. His more recent research focuses on the practices of public participation and political mobilization of emergent concerned groups around social care issues in Spain. He is been visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths College (UK), Department of Sociology, from 2010-2012. He is published in several journals and edited volumes. For more information:

Abstract

A common ground? Independent living in Spain and the differences between older and disabled people’s activism. 

Drawing on a current research about political action and independent living in Spain, this talk addresses some important areas of commonality in the political interests of older people and disabled people. As I will show there are considerable areas of overlap among older and disabled people’s movements (in relation to independent living, housing, social support, etc.). However, there are also important obstacles that prevent these groups from a productive political articulation. The talk will identify some of these barriers and offer some thoughts on the importance of bypassing them by connecting these (and problably other) common struggles.
