Thursday 18 March took place an acknowledge event at the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) to the civil network of UNESCO. The event was chaired by the Vice secretary of the Vice-presidency, the president of the UNESCO Friends Club and the Director of the UNESCO Catalonia Center.
UNESCO has a wide presence in Catalonia since 1961 through its UNESCO Clubs, UNESCO Associations, UNESCO Schools and UNESCO Chairs at different universities. In this sense, the first UNESCO Chair in Catalonia and actually the very first UNESCO Chair in the world was at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1988.
There was also a representative coming from the UNESCO Secretariat in Paris who made a speech regarding the celebration next 21 March of the world day against Racism and Xenophobia.
The vice secretary expressed the need to strengthen the links between the Catalan Government and the UNESCO civil network. She also added that as the highest expression of this commitment, in the new official Estatut (Catalan Official Rule) there is an article mentioning the need of the government to collaborate specially with UNESCO as a way to increase the presence of Catalonia all over the world
